Wat Tham Nam Bo Kaeo – discovering the pearls of Lampang

Wat Tham Nam Bo Kaeo is a little-known tourist attraction in Lampang Province. This white temple, located in a peaceful and picturesque area, seems to be an oasis of peace. We found that out during our visit. In this article, we will take a closer look at this unique place.

Wat Tham Nam Bo Kaeo – an ancient place of worship

The temple complex is relatively young. According to the information we found, in 1995, the Venerable Ajahn Afu Silatejo came to live here. During his long stay at the temple, he built many structures, meditation huts and residences for monks. When he moved to a new place, monks continued to come to live here.

In 2020, Phra Khru Panyawarodom, the abbot of Mae Phrik District, decided to appoint Venerable Phra Khru Niwith Sutthikan to take care of Wat Tham Nam Bo Kaeo. He was also to be responsible for expanding the monks’ residence.

Although the temple is young, this place has been very important to the people of Mae Phrik and Thoen Districts and Mae Wa Sub-District since ancient times. This is because of Nam Bo Kaew or Nam Bo Thip – the holy water that has its source in the cave. This makes the local people have a strong faith.

Inside the Ubosot is the most important Buddha monument, made of jackfruit wood. It is over 300 years old, and the width of the base is about 160 cm (63 inches). The statue is called Luang Pho Nun Duang or Phra Nun Sak Sri. Local people come here to pay homage.

Cave

Behind the Ubosot there is a cave, and stairs lead to it. On the way, you cross a bridge next to a small waterfall, and it has its charm. There are many Buddha statues and saints in the cave as well as exhibits. In addition, the interior of the cave is spacious and has a flat surface, which is convenient for walking.
