Wat Koo Kam is a place with a long history, and yet it is practically unknown to foreign tourists. If you want to delve deeper into exploring the interesting and little-known attractions of Lampang, this temple is one of them. We invite you to learn the most important information and facts related to it.

Wat Koo Kam – when was this place built?

There is little information about the temple, and this also concerns its beginnings. It is believed that it was built in the 7th century by King Anantayot. He was the first ruler of Khelang Nakhon (the former name of Lampang) and the son of Queen Camadevi – the first monarch of the Hariphunchai Kingdom, now Lamphun. He ordered the construction of the temple in the Aranyawasi style.

The further history of the temple is not widely known. Centuries later, it was restored during the reign of Boonyawat Wongmanit – the last king of Lampang, who ruled from 1898 to 1922. During this period, the Phra Borommathat Chedi was also built.

In later years, Wat Koo Kam was submitted for registration, and its boundaries were established in the Royal Gazette, Volume 97, Part 163, on October 21, 1980.

The temple complex consists of several structures. Upon entering through the gate, straight ahead is the Viharn (Assembly Hall) with a large Buddha statue standing in front of it. A short distance from the Viharn is the small Ubosot (Ordination Hall).

Behind the Assembly Hall, you will see the Phra Borommathat Chedi. This is where the Buddha’s relics are kept. The shape of the pagoda resembles a pyramid, and its appearance is inspired by the Lanna style.

During the tour, you can also see the Buddha Pavilion, which houses images of the Enlightened One in a sitting position. They are characterized by the Burmese-Pagan style. In addition, there are replicas of pagodas in the upper corners of each pavilion, and there are 20 of them in total.
