Wat Chiang Rai in Lampang… Wait a minute. Why am I writing Chiang Rai when the article is about a tourist attraction in Lampang? I know, it may be a bit confusing right now. Everything will become clear in a moment, and you will also get to know a beautiful temple that is worth seeing.
Wat Chiang Rai – history and origins of the name
The construction of the temple dates back to 1757. It was during this period that Chao Chomphu (or Phraya Chomphu) built it. He was the son of Chao Phraya Mahayoth, one of the Mon lords who also served under Kings Taksin and Rama I.
Chao Chomphu emigrated with his family from Chiang Saen to Lampang. As he was born in Chiang Rai, he named the temple to commemorate his hometown. Moreover, it was built for the people of the village where Chao Chomphu settled.
In 1914, the temple received Visungkhamasima. This means granting the monks land separated from the country by a border. Temples that have been granted this privilege are considered legitimate and have legal status.
Almost a hundred years later, between 2009 and 2012, a major renovation was carried out, giving the main building an appearance that is a combination of Lanna architecture and the style of the central region.
Wat Chiang Rai – tour of the temple complex
One feature that definitely draws attention is the color of the buildings. They are white, which may also bring to mind the famous temple in Chiang Rai. Despite this, these two places were built in completely different times, and there are many other white temples in Thailand. The similarities are therefore accidental rather than intentional.
Viharn
The largest building is standing right next to the street. It is decorated with white stucco patterns and pieces of glass. Inside, you can see a golden statue of Buddha in the Maravijaya attitude. The walls are decorated with colorful paintings depicting scenes from the life of the Enlightened One. There are also many smaller and larger statues and exhibits in the Viharn.
Buddha statue
There is a large statue of Buddha in front of the temple. As in the Viharn, he is depicted in the Maravijaya attitude. This statue is distinguished by royal insignia. They consist of a crown, earrings, a necklace, bracelets, and rings on each finger.
Pagoda
Another characteristic object is the white pagoda in front of the entrance to Viharn. It is made in the Lanna style and has a bell shape.
The pagoda is surrounded by smaller chedis that are replicas of stupas from other temples. Each of them corresponds to 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac. Local people come here to pray and pay homage to ensure their happiness.
Museum
There is also a museum in the temple complex. Here you can learn more about the culture and history of abbots and their public service in each era.
Wat Chiang Rai – location
The temple is located in Suan Dok Sub-District of Lampang District at Tipchang Rd 427.
Entrance to Wat Chiang Rai is free.
The temple is open from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. Although you may encounter later closing times. During one of our visits, the Viharn was open around 8 p.m.
Decorative lighting is on until 10 p.m.
Wat Chiang Rai – summary
Due to its history and appearance, the temple is an interesting place to visit. The advantage is its location. The Clock Tower Intersection is close, and nearby are Khelang Nakhon Public Park (towards the west) and Kad Kong Ta Night Market (towards the east). Therefore, it is worth including Wat Chiang Rai in your sightseeing plan. A trip to this place will certainly bring a lot of wonderful experiences.
