Black Bridge Railway Park – how to find it?
The park is located in Sop Tui Subdistrict, Lampang District. From Nakhon Lampang Railway Station, the distance is approximately 1 km northwest. Besides, the train station is an excellent landmark.
I would like to add that if you decide to travel by train, e.g. from Chiang Mai to Lampang, you will cross the Black Bridge.
Black Bridge Railway Park – what can you see here?
The advantage of the park is its diversity. People come here to sightsee, children have fun, and there are many people practicing sports – especially running. Moreover, the first edition of the Black Bridge Railway Park Festival took place in March 2024.
Steam locomotive
This rail vehicle, number 943, was built in 1950 by the Japanese company Mitsubishi. After the end of its service, the locomotive was placed in the park as a historic object. It is also an important symbol of Thai-Japanese friendship.
Railway wagon and museum
Another characteristic vehicle is a rebuilt red and white wagon. Inside there is a railway library and a small museum.
Other wagons and vehicles
There are other railway vehicles, smaller and larger, in the Black Bridge Railway Park. Thanks to this, you can see what the railway looked like in Thailand in the past.
You can enter each vehicle, look inside, and take photos. Children especially have a lot of fun as they can play and feel like a train driver.
King Chulalongkorn Monument
A ruler highly respected by the Thai people. He contributed to many reforms and changes in the country. During his reign, the economy developed, and many modernizations were introduced. Residents visiting the park pay tribute to the great ruler at the monument.
Mile marker
Another interesting object in Black Bridge Railway Park. Its base is decorated with small ceramic elements.
Black Bridge – the legendary bridge in Lampang
The bridge was built in 1925. The main materials from which it was made are concrete and steel. It is also quite big – 247 m long and 10 m wide.
Why is it Black Bridge?
The bridge gained its name much later. Interestingly, it was first colored red. This changed during World War II, when Japanese troops established their headquarters in Lampang. This resulted in Allied air attacks on this region of Thailand.
As the bridge was an important logistic element of the Japanese army, it was painted black to camouflage it. Despite this, it was damaged during bomber raids in January 1944. Traces of these events are still visible today, many years after renovations carried out in 1964 by a Japanese company.
Black Bridge Railway Park – entertainment, education, and relaxation
It’s a good idea to visit the park if you’re planning a trip to Lampang. This is a great attraction that will please adults and children. Here you can walk around, climb into the vehicles, and learn about the history of the Thai railway. Especially in the evening, Black Bridge Railway Park looks very beautiful when the sun sets and the lights come on. The atmosphere of this place is unique and worth checking out.
