Baan Phraya Suren by Madame Musur – a restaurant with a rich history

Interestingly, the restaurant opened in a historic Thai house that once belonged to K. Tri Phraya Suren Thiratsen, the first governor of Lampang. Built 133 years ago, the house features colonial architecture. At the turn of the 20th century, Lampang was a popular destination for entrepreneurs from around the world, which influenced the architectural style of some of the city’s buildings.

When the governor died, Lampang’s situation during World War II also changed. The Japanese army arrived in the city, turning the residence into its headquarters and seizing Western businesses and buildings. This resulted in Allied air raids on the city and province. Around the same time, the house was purchased by Mae Liang Kim Nai Duangrat, owner of one of the province’s first ice factories. The house still belongs to the Duangrat family today.

Despite this, the fate of the family and the house was not easy. In 2003, the owner of the mansion passed away, and her stepdaughter, known as Auntie Lek, decided to leave the place and go to the capital to study Thai cuisine. Two decades later, she returned at the request of one of Mae Liang Kim Nai Duangrat’s grandchildren to look after the house, and thus the restaurant was born.
