Ratsada Phisek Bridge – an important symbol of Lampang

Ratsada Phisek Bridge is a landmark that cannot be missed when visiting Lampang. It stands out with its color and interesting history dating back over a hundred years. Thanks to this, it has become a characteristic point on the tourist map of the city and attracts visitors every day.

Ratsada Phisek Bridge – construction and history

The bridge was built in 1894 by Prince Chao Noranan Chai Chavalit and the people of Lampang to celebrate the 25th anniversary of King Chulalongkorn’s (Rama V) accession to the throne. At the time, it was the longest of its kind in Thailand, measuring 120 m in length.

Initially, the bridge was made of wood, but in the meantime it was damaged during the monsoon seasons. This led to the decision to rebuild it as a reinforced concrete bridge, which was to protect it from too frequent damage. Work on the renovation took place in 1917.

During World War II, when the Japanese army established a base in Lampang, the bridge was repainted in camouflage colors. The camouflage was intended to mislead the Allies and avoid possible bombing. Nevertheless, the structure survived, and, according to Lucy Sterling, former principal of the Vijjanari School and an advisor to the Allies, the bridge had little strategic significance. It was repainted again, this time in white, after the war.
