Wang River Street Art – the colorful city of Lampang

When visiting Lampang, in some places you can see many interesting murals. This is not a coincidence, because they are the result of an initiative called the “River Street Art” project.

In 2018, as part of the “Lampang, the dream destination” campaign, more than 20 talented artists were invited to help create these works of art. Thus, they decorated the city with many colorful paintings on houses and walls.

Wang River Street Art – what do the murals represent?

The idea behind Wang River Street Art is similar to other famous street art in Southeast Asia, such as Penang and Ipoh.

These works of art are connected to the history, symbolism, legends, and characteristics of the city and province of Lampang. They create a perfect reflection of what this region of northern Thailand is all about, showing its identity. It is a wonderful opportunity to see the culture and way of life of the local people in the form of art.

The murals represent, among other things, important symbols for Lampang. One of them is the white chicken. The legend of the white chicken is inextricably linked to the city’s past. This bird also appears on famous regional ceramics.

Speaking of Lampang, we must mention the paintings with horses and horse-drawn carriages. The city is famous for this type of transport and is the only one in Thailand that uses them.

The famous “khao teen” cakes made of sticky rice and watermelon juice, the songthaew, and Wat Phra That Lampang Luang are other mural themes. And there are many more.

Location

Street art in Lampang is mainly concentrated on the southern bank of the Wang River in Hua Wiang Subdistrict.

Most of the murals are located on a 400-meter-long wall on the waterfront promenade. These are the areas around the famous Kad Kong Ta Night Market and another attraction, Ratsada Phisek Bridge. You can therefore combine a trip to the market square with a visit to these works of art.

Other interesting places nearby include Museum Lampang and Lampang City Pillar Shrine.
